Sometimes I see or experience something that is equal parts appealing and uncomfortable. Cecelia Webber’s powerful images have this effect on me. The colorful rhythm and symmetry of form is incredibly eye catching. Then I realize that the beautiful flowers and butterflies are assembled from repeated nudes in unusual positions and suddenly I feel differently about what I see. Her work explores how “humans understand themselves in relation to their perceived realities.” For me her work elicits a curious little bit of horror inside of me, akin to Hieronymous Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights”. It is beautiful or disturbing? I think I like that it is a little of both.
